Causes and Solutions for Jaw Crusher Liner Fracture

Jaw crusher liners are typically manufactured with a corrugated (toothed) profile, which effectively applies splitting and crushing forces to break down ore. They play a critical role in the crushing process but are subject to significant wear. Under normal operating conditions, they may require replacement approximately every week. Failure to replace worn liners in a timely manner not only reduces crushing efficiency and output but also increases the mechanical load on the crusher and can lead to liner fracture.

SHANVIM’s article outlines six primary causes of jaw crusher liner fracture:

Substandard Casting Process of the Moving Jaw: The use of inferior casting techniques can result in defects such as excessive porosity in the moving jaw. These defects become initiation points for cracks, leading to fracture after a period of operation.

Entry of Uncrushable Material: When non-frangible material (tramp iron) enters the crushing chamber, it causes a sudden spike in pressure. If the toggle plate fails to perform its designed function of breaking to protect the crusher, the shock load is transmitted directly to the moving jaw, potentially causing fracture.

Displacement of the Moving Jaw During Operation: If the moving jaw shifts from its correct position, its bottom may collide with the frame guard plate. This impact can result in the fracture of the moving jaw.

Failure of the Tension Rod Spring: A failed or weakened tension rod spring no longer provides adequate pre-load and shock absorption. This increases the dynamic loads and peak pressure on the moving jaw, elevating the risk of fracture.

Improper Setting of the Discharge Opening: The gap between the moving jaw and the fixed jaw determines the size of the discharge opening. An incorrectly set discharge opening can create abnormal stress distributions within the moving jaw, contributing to fracture defects.

Improper Feeding Practices: Incorrect feeding, such as off-center loading or feeding overly large material, can create uneven force distribution and increase the impact pressure experienced by the moving jaw.

Initial Wear Management:
In the early stages of liner wear, the jaw plates can often be rotated end-for-end or the upper and lower plates can be swapped. Typically, wear is most severe in the middle and lower sections of the jaw plate.

Replacement Criteria:

Replace the liners when the tooth height is worn down by approximately three-fifths (3/5).

If the liners on both ends are worn down by about two-fifths (2/5), replacement is also necessary.
